WNBA Finals Preview: Las Vegas Aces Seek Back-to-Back Titles
The Liberty are led by this year s MVP Breanna Stewart (19.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.8 blocks per game) and former MVP and star forward Jonquel Jones (16.5 points, 12.8 rebounds, 2.2 blocks per game).
The Liberty also have a dangerous backcourt with point guard Courtney Vandersloot (9.3 points, 6.8 assists, 1.7 steals per game) and shooting guard Sabrina Ionescu (16.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists per game).
Ionescu won the 3-Point Shooting Contest during WNBA All-Star Weekend, and she s knocking down 43.2% of her treys in the postseason. Forward Betnijah Laney (17 points per game) has been on fire in the playoffs, averaging a team-best 43.8% from beyond the arc.
The Liberty swept the Washington Mystics in the first round. They lost Game 1 of the semifinals against the Connecticut Sun, but then won three games in a row to advance to the WNBA Finals.
Head coach Sandy Brondello won a WNBA title with the Phoenix Mercury in 2014, and is attempting to lead the Liberty to their first championship. The Liberty advanced to the WNBA Finals four times in the first six seasons of the league s existence, but haven t appeared in the finals since 2002.
The Aces and Liberty were 2-2 against each other during the regular season. The Liberty defeated the Aces in the Commissioner s Cup, which was an in-season tournament that didn t count toward the regular-season standings.
